How to keep my holiday home secure.

We take safety and security very seriously. And we want you to too. To help you decide what types of security and safety devices you might want to have in your accommodation, here’s some simple information on the most common ones and which ones might be right for your accommodation.

Smart locks

Keys get lost. People get locked out. You can avoid these unfortunate situations by investing in a smart lock instead of having physical keys. As well as completely saving you the whole process of handing over physical keys, some smart electronic locks offer additional security measures.

Security alarms

Customers who value security above all else appreciate accommodation with alarms. There are also those who do not like security alarms at all. Before investing in a security alarm, you will have to weigh all the pros and cons of having one.

The positive side of a security alarm is that it can give guests peace of mind. The alarm can alert you or your guests immediately if an intruder enters your home.

Security cameras

If you decide to install a security camera in your accommodation, it is important that you can answer guests’ questions about it in a diplomatic and hospitable manner. Most important of all is to be transparent about all security cameras installed inside or outside the accommodation. This is something you should always include on your accommodation page. If you do not include this information, you run the risk of being suspended from the platform.

A very popular option among owners is the video door entry system. They are usually installed at the front door and function as a doorbell, security camera and two-way intercom. When someone approaches the door or rings the doorbell, the video door entry system sends a notification to your mobile phone so you can view the live image from your phone and respond.

Sound and motion detectors

Motion sensors or detectors are less of a privacy concern than cameras, but they should also not be placed in areas where customers expect privacy. They are often used outdoors as a security measure to alert guests that someone has approached the accommodation, but also to demarcate areas that should not be accessed. For example, if you have indicated in your house rules that there is a place (such as a garage or storage room) that is off-limits to guests, a motion sensor can help to reinforce this rule.

Safes and lockers

Although not strictly necessary, those who are in an unfamiliar neighbourhood and away from home will like to have a safe place to store their valuables. Digital or LED lockers that do not require a physical key are recommended. Safes or lockers that are fixed to the wall are naturally more secure.
