New tourist tax to be applied in Portugal as of January 2023

Recently it has been published by the government of Portugal, the implementation of a new tourist tax, specifically in the Azores Islands.

According to this information, as of January 2023, the Azores Islands will charge a tourist tax to compensate public investment in tourism and finance the impact of the activity. It will apply to visitors over 14 years of age, who will have to pay one euro per night – up to a maximum of four in a row – and two euros for disembarking in ports.

The new tax, which will be in force from January 1st, will be applied in any of the islands of the Portuguese archipelago and its cost will be reduced to 50% between November and March. The tax is created “as a way to mitigate the negative externalities produced by visitors” and to finance “the profits generated by the realization of public expenditure in activities and investments related to tourism”, explains the decree published this Tuesday in the Diário da República.
