This summer has had good results, with many experts claiming that we have already reached normalisation or at least are very close to it. August has closed with good numbers, but September promises to be one of the best months.
According to information provided by the news portal Smartravel, SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index has indicated that the volume of bookings for our country is now 114.22% above pre-pandemic figures. Spain will remain strong in its position as a reference destination also in September, a key month in the tourist season in recent years.
Our country is ahead of the global average (98.19%) and other neighbouring countries such as the United Kingdom (104.18%), France (97.22%), Italy (91.63%), Morocco (86.08%) and Malta (81.62%), and only behind Portugal, which recorded a booking volume of 125.73%. Travelling in September is a growing trend, and will continue to be so this year, as hotel bookings have been on the rise for weeks, anticipating a longer summer season.
Of all the bookings made during the last two weeks of August, 57.77% are for stays to be enjoyed this month. Furthermore, while in August, domestic tourism is stronger, in September the international market is growing again, which now occupies more than half of the total bookings.
Thus, 64.32% of the guests staying in Spanish hotels this month will be foreigners. The good performance of the sector is evenly distributed throughout the country, although Barcelona undoubtedly stands out above all the Spanish and European capitals with a volume of bookings of 139.56% over the precovid data. The rest of the cities in our country are also maintaining a good pace, with Madrid at 112.5% of 2019 bookings, Seville at 114.4%, Malaga at 109.07% and Valencia at 105.5%.
