Venice imposes reservations and fees on passing tourists

Venice tourist tax

As reported by the Los Angeles Time, starting in January 2023, Venice will force transient tourists – who only visit for one day – to make reservations and pay fees to visit the historic city of canals. Authorities claim they will try to manage the flow of visitors, who often outnumber locals, by preventing foot traffic in the alleys and on the pedestrian bridges.
Venetian authorities on Friday unveiled the new rules that will take effect on Jan. 16, 2023.

Venice Tourist Tax

Tourists who choose not to stay overnight in hotels or other accommodations will have to make an online reservation, indicating the day of the visit, and pay a fee of between 3 and 10 euros ($3.15 and $10.5) per person, depending on whether it is made in advance, if it is high season or if the city is crowded.

Violators can pay fines of up to €300 ($315) if caught without paying for their reservation and payment with a QR code.

Around 80% of tourists go to Venice solely for the day. In 2019, the last full year before the pandemic, some 19 million day-trippers visited Venice and gave it just a fraction of the revenue of those who spent at least one night.

Venice’s tourism commissioner rejected the idea that the measure seeks to limit the number of outsiders going to Italy’s most visited city.
