Foreigners are once again taking over tourism in Spain
Over the last two years, tourist arrivals in Spain saw a significant drop, leading to a period where domestic tourism prevailed. Nonetheless, in 2021, as reported by the digital newspaper Hosteltur, overnight stays in hotel establishments soared to 13.6 million, marking an increase of 458.9% over the same period in the previous year, which recorded only 2.4 million stays. Foreign tourists accounted for the majority of hotel nights, with more than 7.5 million, surpassing the 6 million stays by residents of Spain.
This uptick coincided with an overall improvement in health conditions and the gradual lifting of travel restrictions. Furthermore, the average daily rate (ADR) for hotels per occupied room reached 87.8 euros, up 45.2% from the same month in the previous year, according to data from the Hotel Tourism Situation (EOH) by the INE.
The average stay in February increased by 28.2% compared to February 2021, standing at 2.6 overnight stays per traveller. During the first two months of 2022, overnight stays increased by 393.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In February, 44.7% of the available bed places were covered, with an annual increase of 169.9%, while the weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces rose by 201.4% and stood at 54.5 %. The Canary Islands had the highest occupancy rate by bed places during February (61.6%), followed by Madrid, with 46.2%.
Issuing countries
Travelers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 23.0% and 14.4%, respectively, of the total overnight stays by non-residents in hotel establishments in February, coinciding with the gradual elimination of the latest restrictions.
