Portugal increased their bookings by 600% this last week. We show you how it did it.
Portugal until now didn’t have high numbers of reservations, due to coronavirus and the big number of contagious, however, one good news for this country was the recent announced of United Kingdom which release its COVID traffic Light list, to regulate international travel from May 17, in which Portugal has been listed by green, among the list destinations. After this announcement, Portugal has seen a major surge in the number of people booking summer holidays. British tour operations have registered a boom in reservations to Portugal, Jet2 and Jet2Holidays have registered in just 24 hours “an increase of 600% in bookings to Faro (Algarve) and Madeira, 1.300% more than the week before the announcement”. Other Algarve destinations are Albufeira, Vilamoura, Carvoeiro, Tavira and Alvor, outside the algarve we can find Madeira, Lisbon, Cascais and Porto.
The CEO of Jet2 has recalled that the group will resume its trips on June 24 and trusts that the British Government will give “more positive news about other places to which we can fly in the coming weeks“. But not only Jet2 had an increase in their number of reservations, also, other companies such as British Airways are already beginning to increase their positions due to the increase in demand. Other good news for this country is that after the announcement a lot of companies have started to increase their offer to this country for this summer. TUI UK announced on Friday that it will increase its flights and holidays to the Algarve and Madeira, with new departures from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. It will also add additional weekly flights from Gatwick, Manchester and Funchal.
Online Lodging sites such as Airbnb also say that customers are booking longer vacations and are looking for larger spaces where they can stay with their friends and families. But one negative thing is that the flight prices have increased to Portugal, right after knowing what the traffic light would look like, according to LBC radio report “On Friday night, one of the most expensive travel options for May 17 appeared to be a British Airways flight from Heathrow to Faro in the Algarve, costing £436 or £530 depending on the time of day”.
